Job Market Workshop:
This course is a professionalization workshop intended especially for Ph.D candidates who are planning to enter the job market in the 2027-2028 academic year. We will discuss how and when to start preparing to apply for academic jobs. Participants will draft, peer review, and revise their job application documents, including the cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching, research, and diversity statements, syllabi, and project abstracts. We will also work toward tailoring application materials for different academic and non-academic institutions and types of post-PhD careers (postdocs, administrative roles, tenure-track positions, visiting positions, lectureships, etc.) and preparing for first-round interviews and campus visits. We will use this workshop as a forum to discuss the various logistics of academic employment and consider strategies for creating a sustainable and supportive plan for your careers. Finally, we will use this workshop as an opportunity not only to discuss the logistics of academic employment, but to consider student investments in academia and broader ambitions, and to think about the diversity of sustaining career choices that might best serve those ambitions. The course will include readings about academia, the job market, careers outside of academia, as well as practical tools to develop better/healthier work habits. Because this is a workshop, all written work will be shared and discussed among all participants.
